Water Safety in and Around the Home

January 3, 2025

It’s no secret that most children love to play in the water, whether it’s bath time fun, playing in a kiddie pool, swimming in a backyard pool, or just splashing in mud puddles. Spending time playing in the water can be a wonderful way to enjoy the day, as long as you follow some essential water safety tips.

Bath time can be a lot of fun for you and your children, whether you are splashing with your toddler in the bathtub or giving your baby a gentle bath in the sink. It’s also a place with several hidden dangers, so paying careful attention is important. This is why the first rule of bath time for young children is never to allow yourself to become distracted.

Accidental drowning is the leading cause of preventable deaths among children aged one to four, and infants under a year old are more likely to drown in the bathroom or a bucket of water than anywhere else. However, the key word here is “preventable.” By following proper water safety tips, much of this risk can be mitigated.

Keep Everyone Safe with These Tips

The first step to preventing any such accident is to always keep an eye on your child whenever they are in the water. Always keep young children within arm’s reach of an adult.

Remember to Drain, Close and Lock

When bath time is over, drain water out of the tub or sink immediately, and empty any buckets or containers of water after use. Close all toilet lids and use toilet locks to prevent small children from opening them. It’s also a good practice to keep bathroom and laundry room doors firmly shut.

Keep Your Child Safe in and Around Pools

If you have a private pool, there’s no shortage of pool safety tips for parents that can make all the difference. Start by installing a security fence around the pool area.

Self-closing, self-latching gates that open outward, with latches placed out of reach of small children, are a great addition to a fence at least four feet tall.

For above-ground pools, remove access ladders when not in use, and make sure pool covers are secured tightly. Even kiddie pools should be emptied after use and stored upside down to prevent rainwater from accumulating.

Small children must always be accompanied by a responsible adult whenever they play in or near water. If they enter the pool, make floatation devices and life jackets a non-negotiable part of the fun.

Additionally, always enforce rules against running or roughhousing near the pool to minimize risks. Parents should be prepared for emergencies by taking a CPR and first aid course and learning basic rescue techniques.

Master the Basics of CPR

Knowing how to act quickly if an accident occurs can save lives. This is why familiarity with CPR and first aid is essential to water safety for every parent.

Enjoy Your Time Close to the Water

Children can face risks when in or around water, but with a few simple practices and pool safety tips for parents, your family can enjoy worry-free fun.

By staying vigilant, using protective measures, and learning CPR and first aid, you can create a safe environment that allows everyone to relax and make the most of playtime or bath time near water.
