WHAT MELISSA IS DOING NOW....
I lost my son, Drew, in an accidental drowning when he was 4½ years old. And in the deepest, darkest moment of my pain, I sat down with a bottle of pills and a glass of vodka, intending to escape it all.
Instead, I opened a letter from a complete stranger that saved my life. It was from a woman whose 6-year-old daughter was hit by a car while riding her bike outside. This complete stranger wrote to me about the guilt of running back into the house for a few seconds to grab something she’d forgotten. She said she knew how difficult this would be for me to carry, too, and how tempted I would be to blame myself, to beat myself up, or worse.
For the first time, I felt like someone understood my pain.
More than that, she was the first person I’d found who could serve as a credible witness to the devastating pain I was feeling – as well as the promise that, one day, I could be ok again.
She wrote: “It is possible to enjoy your life again. I promise you will smile again. Joy and happiness can certainly be yours if you choose to believe it’s possible. But you have to choose. Every. Single. Day.”
In her words, I grasped a new truth and held on for dear life:
If she could be ok, I could be, too.
Today, I am unapologetically happy, grateful and fulfilled. I feel gratitude for every moment I shared with my son, and I am still grateful for the relationship I have with his spirit and memory now.
He’s in everything I do, and he’s the bedrock of my work, purpose and sense of fulfillment. Drew is the reason that, today, I lead a community of mothers who are learning to transform through the pain, so they can re-imagine and redesign a life of emotional wholeness and spiritual freedom. I’ve written a memoir that shares the story of my deepest trauma, loss and betrayal, as well as the resulting resilience, reinvention and imagination that followed.
I speak to international audiences about overcoming the loss of a child and the key mindsets, practices and tools. I’ve created courses that teach others how to find purpose by sharing their stories.
But most importantly, I’ve re-imagined, redesigned and rebuilt a life that's full of joy, fulfillment and peace. I’ve discovered emotional wholeness and spiritual freedom. And I’ve transformed my relationship with my son because I choose to believe in a grieving process that ends in radical acceptance and empowerment.
That life-saving stranger was right. Her words gave me the hope I needed to change everything. The A.R.T. of Healing is your letter.
