Need the power to change your emotions and fast? Learn how to shift your emotional state in three steps.

Before you can learn to shift your emotional state with intentionality and grace, there’s one thing you have to understand: Emotions are simply energies in motion, or e-motion

This energetic motion creates a feeling in our bodies, then we interpret and label it.

But if you can move past the thinking mind and simply feel the energy moving through your body, then you remain grounded, connected and in control

To shift your emotional state, you have to feel the energy stored in your body on a cellular level – then decide what you want to do about it.

Here’s how:

Understanding the Energy of Emotion

Since emotions are different energies, they also have different levels of vibration. Emotions that feel bad have low vibrations, while emotions that feel good have higher vibrations.

Low-vibrational emotions cause us to feel depleted, numb, indifferent, listless, bored, humdrum, passive and more. In more extreme cases, you can feel anger, rage, resentment, deep sadness, emptiness, or even vengeance. Whether you feel a total lack of energy or an uncontrollable, frenzied energy, they all fall low on the spectrum because they’re stagnant or slow-moving energies.

More importantly, we tend to see things like poor decision-making when we’re stuck inside these low-vibrational energies, especially with the intense ones like rage.

How To Shift Your Emotional State In 3 Steps

For all the intensity of low-vibrational emotions, there’s equally intense positive emotions on the high end. It’s up to you to reach for the high-vibes.

Here are three steps to shifting your emotional state with intentionality and grace.

1. Clarity

When you start to feel the energy change in your body, and the low-vibe emotion is welling up inside you, the first thing you need to do is get clear:

  • What’s going on?
  • What emotion are you feeling?
  • What about my situation is making me so upset, and is that the only thing that’s going on right now?
  • Is this a trigger for deeper unresolved emotions?

Sometimes it’s obvious. Sometimes it’s not. But do whatever you have to do to get clear. If that means you need to step away, then step away. If that means running a few miles, then lace up your tennis shoes. Do whatever it takes to find clarity.

2. Movement

Once you know what you’re feeling, what’s going on and why, it’s time to take action to shift it. Sometimes you need to physically move to work out the energy. If you’re like me, it’s almost always a requirement

My best advice is to find some way to move your body. Put your body in motion to quiet the energy and take control of what you’re feeling. It doesn’t have to be fast motion – you could even just walk in place, or feel your breath moving in your chest.

In fact, it’s best to choose your activity based on the feeling you want to create. If you want to feel calm, for example, try a restorative yoga practice. If you need to release pent-up anxiety, then going for a run might help you work the energy out of your body.

Tap in. Listen. Take action.

3. Acceptance

Now that you’re clear on what you want, and you’ve taken action to create it, you have to accept it if you want to move on from it.

Denying that you feel a certain way only guarantees that you will continue to feel that way.

What we resist always persists.

What we accept creates an opening for more.

What’s the best way to reach acceptance? Forgiveness.

Forgiveness is often the barrier between emotional struggle and emotional freedom. You can have a breakthrough, for example, about a boundary that you need to enforce. But when we fail to release the emotion behind the boundary issue, then it will continue to be a trigger in the future.

Forgiveness is that release. So forgive wherever you need to. Forgive freely, and freedom will be yours in return.

Keep practicing until you can feel that it’s been released from every single cell in your body.

The Bottom Line

Clearing these unwanted energies helps you change your vibrational state not just for a moment but as a fundamental shift in your being. It’s a constant. It becomes your demeanor, and it influences the way you show up in the world, in a positive way. When you’re that clear and connected, you tap into immense inner power to create the life you truly want.

Why? It’s not an external problem; it’s an internal commitment.

Things can upset you. Things can go wrong. But nothing can steal your joy and inner peace.

Things might come up from time to time, and some seasons will be uncomfortable. But if it’s costing you your entire emotional wellbeing, then this work might be right for you.

Most people think this has to be complicated. But it’s actually quite simple.

It’s the choice – and the commitment to that decision.

If you say you want to live with peace and joy, then choose the mindsets, tools and behaviors that will get you there.

We may not choose our circumstances, but we do choose our thoughts and emotions.

So start by getting clear, quieting down, and understanding what about the situation or person is problematic or triggering for you. Ask yourself those powerful questions, and as soon as you have the answer, take action.
